Diego Lopes Reacts to Alexa Grasso’s Disappointing UFC 306 Defeat: ‘Alexa Froze’

Diego Lopes had the best and worst of fight night at UFC 306.

The featherweight prospect’s bout couldn’t have gone better, as he won a convincing unanimous decision over the highly regarded Brian Ortega on the main card on Saturday. Unfortunately for Lopes, he would have to deal with a major disappointment as he found himself in Alexa Grasso’s corner one fight later, serving as coach for her flyweight championship loss to Valentina Shevchenko.

Grasso lost lacklusterly to Shevchenko, with her poor performance an anticlimax to her trilogy with “Bullet.” At the post-match press conference that evening, Lopes was at a loss to pinpoint what had gone wrong for his teammate.

“I think Alexa froze and wasn’t in the fight tonight,” Lopes said. “Valentina didn’t do much either. What did she do? She just took her to the ground and tried to control her there. She didn’t do any damage, she didn’t do anything.”

It was clear from Lopes’ demeanor that he had tempered his own joy at the post-fight press conference following Grasso’s championship defeat. But it wasn’t just the sight of the flyweight title changing hands that soured Lopes’ mood.

UFC 306, touted as a celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day weekend, saw a number of Mexican-born fighters underperform, including Daniel Zellhuber, Irene Aldana and the heavily favored Yazmin Jauregui. Lopes would have liked his countrymen to share in his success.

“I’m a little bit angry about all the Mexicans who lost tonight,” Lopes said. “Of course I’m happy with my win, but I would have liked to see more Mexicans win. But this is the toughest sport in the world. You can’t always get what you want, so yeah, I’m a little bit angry about that.”

Lopes has no regrets about having to prepare for Grasso’s title fight so quickly after his own fight ended. He looks forward to discussing Grasso’s performance once the post-UFC 306 madness is over.

“I really want to support everyone on my team, so I made sure I was there for Alexa,” Lopes said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t win tonight and I wasn’t able to talk to her because I was brought here for all my media obligations, but I’m looking forward to talking to her after this.”
