Defaulter hacks state registry to fake his own death

A Kentucky debt collector has been sentenced to 81 months in prison after pleading guilty to hacking into a government death registry system online to fake his own death and committing other crimes related to computer fraud and identity theft.

Jesse Kipf, a 39-year-old, admitted he tried to avoid paying the reportedly $116,000 he was owed. outstanding alimony payments to his daughter and her mother. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Kentucky said that in addition to committing computer fraud to extort money from his child, Kipf also infiltrated several other business networks, as well as private and government networks, and then sold the access he gained on Dark Web forums to the highest bidder.

To fake his own death, the U.S. Attorney’s Office explained that Kipf used stolen credentials from a doctor in another state to log into the Hawaii Death Registry System and fill out the necessary paperwork to create a death certificate for himself. As a result, Kipf was listed as deceased in many government databases, prosecutors added.

“This scheme was a cynical and destructive effort based in part on the inexcusable goal of avoiding his child support obligations,” said Carlton S. Shier, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. in a press release after Kipf’s conviction. “This case is a stark reminder of how damaging criminals can be with computers, and how critical computer and online security is to all of us. Fortunately, thanks to the excellent work of our law enforcement partners, this case will serve as a warning to other cybercriminals who will have to face the consequences of their nefarious behavior.”
