Davis Warren on Michigan’s loss to Texas: ‘I shot us in the foot’

When a team wins, the quarterback often gets too much credit, and when a team loses like Michigan did Saturday, 31-12 to Texas, the quarterback gets most of the blame. With that in mind, Michigan quarterback Davis Warren took matters into his own hands, held himself accountable, and didn’t point fingers.

Warren was 22 of 33 for 204 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and Michigan’s offense was just 3 of 12 on third down.

“My job as quarterback is to keep us moving on those third downs and I’ve got to get better at that,” Warren said.

Warren was asked if he was a little behind in his progression and throwing the ball, he admitted that there is still room for improvement in that area.

“I’ve got to get better at that. Take what the defense gives me and when the opportunity presents itself on the field, throw the ball,” Warren said. “They gave us some opportunities, we had a good head start on what they were going to do defensively and we didn’t take advantage of it. It’s up to me to find the open man and evaluate what they’re doing defensively, get the protection right and find the guy who’s going to run the route and beat the coverage. I’ve got to get better.”

Warren said the problems on offense weren’t Texas’ fault, but the Wolverines’ lack of execution. He said, “We let them get away with it too easily” and that “it was a bad feeling.”

“I didn’t do enough. I shot us in the foot too many times,” Warren said. “We didn’t do enough offensively and that was our fault.”

Although it was a tough day for the Michigan team, Warren is not going to let it discourage him or stop him from moving forward. He will play his first game at home next week against Arkansas State.

“We’re better than what we showed today,” Warren said. “The only way to prove that is to do it next Saturday. That game is coming next Saturday whether we like it or not. The guys in the room, we’re all going to be prepared to flip the script.”

Michigan is now 1-1 on the season and Big Ten Conference play is fast approaching, starting with USC in two weeks at Michigan Stadium. Warren and the Wolverines will need to improve quickly to get the season back on track.
