The 2024 Mets season was an absolute roller coaster.

It’s only fitting that this is exactly how their playoff victory went Monday afternoon, as they pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind win over the trailing Braves. Francisco Lindor‘s go-ahead home run in the ninth.

“That was one of the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of,” Carlos Mendoza said. “Just the significance of it, coming back in the eighth and then losing the lead and coming back again in the ninth, it was unbelievable, it’s like you could write a book.”

This season’s story would certainly make a damn good book too.

Even when he was first-year president of baseball operations David Sterns told everyone in spring training that this team was built to be a contender, but outside perception remained low.

That fell even lower when they lost their first five games of the season and were soon considered likely sellers again before the deadline after falling to a low of 11 games below .500 during a brutal skid in May.

But the boys in the locker room kept their heads down and answered the bell again and again, and after turning things around throughout the second half, they were finally able to celebrate on Monday.

“They never gave up and never gave up,” says the owner Steve Cohen said. “I have never seen such a resilient group. They believed in themselves when a lot of people didn’t, they just went ahead and proved it. You have to admire that, it shows that everything is possible.”

“I’m so happy for everyone here, and I’m happy for Mets fans,” Stearns added. “We are a franchise that hasn’t had enough of these moments, we need to have more of these moments and this is a very important step in that direction.”

And while Monday night’s celebration was certainly well-deserved, the Mets know there is another chapter to be written in that book, starting on Tuesday night against the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers.

“We know we have more work to do, I don’t think anyone here is satisfied,” Stearns said.

“I just want to keep going,” Cohen added. “This team can do it. They believe in themselves and anything is possible. No one believed in what we did at the trade deadline, but they played it out and continued to believe in themselves. Here we are now, so you want to believe it.
