Dak Prescott: My motivation is to fulfill my part of this deal

Dak Prescott finally got his contract, agreeing to a four-year, $240 million contract with $231 million guaranteed just hours before the season opener. He will earn more than $400 million in his career by the time the deal expires in 2028.

The question is whether he will win at least one Super Bowl title in that time.

Despite all the success he has had in his career with the Cowboys, Prescott has gone just 2-5 in the postseason and has never advanced the Cowboys past the divisional round.

It’s my only motivation,” Prescott said of the Super Bowl, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Just fulfill my end of the deal. Just deliver. That’s my motivation. Right now, it’s about celebrating this win tonight. A great win with these guys, looking forward to flying back with them, but then turning the page tomorrow, going to the Saints and taking it one game at a time. That’s the one thing that’s at the forefront of my mind. Not the money. It’s about fulfilling my end of the deal. And I want to do it here.”

Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and Texas Stadium in 1989 for $140 million. His team won three championships in his first seven seasons as owner, but has not been to the NFC Championship Game since.

Now that he is the highest-paid player in NFL history at an average of $60 million per year, the pressure on Prescott appears to be mounting.

“I put the most pressure on myself,” Prescott said. “It’s that simple. I’m not happy with my . . . performance today, and that’s what motivates me. That’s what pushes me. You try — and I say try — you try to be disappointed in the locker room, but you know it’s a win abroad, it’s good for the team, and then you get teammates telling you it was a hell of a day for you.

“I put the most pressure on myself. No one is a bigger critic than I am personally, and I expect greatness from myself with my standards, my expectations and the same for this team. So there’s no extra pressure.”
