The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants set a streaming record this week during their Thursday Night Football game on Amazon Prime.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the game averaged 16.22 million views, marking an all-time high for Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime. Amazon also said the 20-15 win for Dallas was the most-streamed NFL regular-season game in history.

The streaming record for any game still belongs to last year’s wild-card game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, which drew nearly 28 million viewers on Peacock in January.

Viewership of the NFL as a whole has grown in recent years. ESPN reported in January that the league averaged 17.9 million viewers in 2023, a seven percent increase over the 2022 season. Last season’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers was not only the most watched NFL game in league history, as well as the most watched broadcast in history with an average of 123.4 million viewers across all platforms.

Looking ahead to upcoming Thursday Night Football games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take on the Atlanta Falcons next week before the San Francisco 49ers play the Seattle Seahawks on October 10.

While the NFL has been criticized for switching to streaming services instead of traditional broadcasts for Thursday Night Football games, the move still appears to yield high ratings, with Thursday night’s record-setting performance being yet another example.

Along with Amazon Prime and Peacock, Netflix has entered the NFL streaming game as the company will exclusively stream two games on Christmas Day. Paramount+ also streams all games airing on CBS, as Peacock does with games airing on NBC.
