Costco is among businesses closed for Labor Day. Full list of closures – NBC Chicago

With Labor Day just around the corner, a day to celebrate and thank the nation’s workers, that also means a number of businesses in Illinois and across the country will be closed. But what exactly will be open and closed on this holiday?

This year the federal holiday falls on Monday, September 2.

Some companies are closing their doors to give their employees time off, while others are operating on a more limited work schedule.

Which stores are open on Labor Day?

  • Aldi – Most locations have shortened opening hours, from 9am to 6pm

USPS

Labor Day is one of 11 holidays that the United States Postal Service observes. This means that all U.S. post offices are closed on Monday and no mail is delivered.

FedEx and UPS

FedEx and UPS will not be offering pick-up or delivery on Labor Day. Some FedEx stores will be open with reduced hours, so please check your local FedEx office location for information and times.

Some UPS stores are closed, while others are open with adjusted hours. Please check the location of your local UPS store for information and times.

Banks

Banks are closed on federal holidays, including Labor Day. Some banking services may remain available, such as self-service ATMs for those who want to withdraw or make a deposit.

Schools

Labor Day is considered a “statutory school holiday,” meaning many schools in the state will be closed. While there are some holidays that can be “modified” or “waived,” Labor Day is not one of them, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

These days only include:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday (third Monday in January);
  • President Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12);
  • Casimir Pulaski’s birthday (first Monday in March);
  • Columbus Day (second Monday in October); and
  • Veterans Day (November 11)* (see below)
