Classic film reportedly getting sequel with original cast

A sequel to the classic adventure film ‘The Goonies’ is reportedly in the works, with the original cast returning.

The 1985 film follows a group of kids from Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon, who follow a treasure map to save their home from foreclosure.

Award-winning actors Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan and Corey Feldman starred as children in the film.

The news was originally reported by The Sun, which reported that production on the film could begin next summer and that the film would hit theaters in 2026 or 2027.

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it has finally been given the green light to go ahead,” a source told The Sun. “The team are excited about the chance to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience.”

Some of the cast reunited virtually in Josh Gad’s 2020 web series, and writer Steven Spielberg explained why a sequel hasn’t happened yet.

“Every few years we come up with an idea, and it doesn’t hold up,” he said. “The problem is the bar that you’ve all set for this genre. I don’t think we’ve really been able to come up with an idea that’s better than The Goonies that we all did in the ’80s.”
