Chiefs Andy Reid’s reason for benching Kingsley Suamataia against Bengals

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs’ last-second win over the Cincinnati Bengals kept the team undefeated on the young season. However, there are some question marks surrounding the win, particularly on the offensive line.

During his press conference on Sunday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed his decision to bench starting left tackle Kingsley Suamataia late in the game.

“Kingsley, he’s playing against one of the best defensive ends in the league. It would be a great experience for him to have and learn from, but I ultimately took him out of the game,” Reid said. “Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward.”

Bengals veteran pass rusher Trey Hendrickson dominated the one-on-one matchup with Suamataia. Reid is optimistic that the experience will help the former BYU stand out in the long run.

“Listen, it’s a great learning experience; sometimes when you get beat a few times and you’re a young guy, you haven’t quite found the answers to the test there on how to solve it,” Reid said. “Your coach talks to you and you have to calm down. That happens, so you go back and you learn from it. Wanya will do the same. He did a good job of jumping in, except for the penalties.”

Morris committed a penalty while trying to block Hendrickson on the final drive, so it’s uncertain whether either player will start next Sunday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Reid said. “I’ll go back and watch the tape, and I’ll talk to Coach (Andy) Heck, and we’ll go from there.”
