Chargers QB Justin Herbert questionable with high ankle sprain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said Friday that doctors have diagnosed him with a high right ankle sprain. He said his status for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers “has not yet been determined.”

Herbert said the pain in his ankle was “not too bad” and that he limped after his press conference.

“Luckily it’s only Friday,” Herbert said. “It is what it is. It’s about getting treatment and making sure it’s as good as it can be and doing everything you can to keep the swelling down and the pain down and just keep going.”

A source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Herbert felt better Saturday than he did Friday. The source said the Chargers are hopeful Herbert can play, but they need to see how he feels Sunday before making a final decision.

The Chargers have listed Herbert as questionable for Sunday’s game. He did not practice Wednesday or Friday this week and was limited on Thursday.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said the fact that Herbert did not practice Friday was not a sign of a regression in Herbert’s recovery, but rather was part of the plan the athletic training staff had in place.

“Every day it gets better,” Herbert said. “It’s just getting to a point where you feel comfortable going out and being able to move.”

Harbaugh said on Wednesday that quarterback Easton Stick would be the starter if Herbert did not play, but on Friday Harbaugh appeared to backtrack on that statement.

“Until I know exactly what Justin’s status is, I’m not going to give anything away about what the terms might be,” he said.

Herbert’s injury occurred in the third quarter of Sunday’s 26-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. Herbert attempted to escape the pocket but was pulled from behind by linebacker DJ Johnson and simultaneously struck face-first by defensive end Jayden Peevy, pinning his lower body underneath Johnson.

Herbert walked off the field and went with trainers to a medical tent, but he didn’t miss a moment. After his post-match press conference, Herbert walked with a severe limp.

This is the second injury Herbert has had this season. During training camp, he spent two weeks in a running boot while dealing with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot. Herbert said he would have to monitor the injury throughout the season.

However, Herbert said Friday that he has recovered from the injury to his plantar fascia.

Herbert had been one of the NFL’s most durable quarterbacks through his first four seasons, starting 62 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak by a quarterback, before a broken right index finger in Week 14 of last year ended his season. Stick was winless in the Chargers’ last four games.

“Injuries are unfortunately part of the game and you have to do everything you can to limit them,” Herbert said. “… Complaining and worrying about them doesn’t help much.”
