Chappell Roan Explains Meeting Photographer on the VMAs Red Carpet

One of the More dramatic moments from this year’s MTV Video Music Awards occurred on the red carpet when Chappell Roan — in full medieval garb — told someone in a group of photographers, “Shut the f*ck up.” Moments after the incident, she explained her upset during a separate interview on the VMAs red carpet.

In a video from the red carpet, Roan — Rolling Stone‘s current cover star — is seen getting her outfit ready for photos when a seemingly impatient person says something that angers her. “Shut the f*ck up,” Roan yelled back, pointing her long metal fingernail at an unseen and still unidentified person. “No. Not me, bitch.”

After admonishing the person, Roan’s walk down the red carpet proceeded without incident, culminating in an interview with Entertainment tonightwho asked her what had happened.

“It’s quite overwhelming and quite scary. As someone who gets a lot of anxiety from people yelling at you, the carpet is horrible and I yelled back,” she said AND. “I yelled back. You can’t yell at me like that.”

Singer Noah Kahan was among those who supported Roan on social media following the incident, opening up about his own encounter with the paparazzi. “I will never forget leaving Clive Davis and the horrible shit that photographers and paparazzi or whatever said to me for my sweet mother who couldn’t believe it was happening,” Kahan wrote. “I love this @ChappellRoan way of standing up for yourself.”

Roan, who won Best New Artist at the VMAs and performed her hit “Good Luck, Babe” on the show, has been outspoken about setting strong boundaries between herself and her fans, a courtesy that now likely extends to the paparazzi as well.

“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is normal to do to people who are famous or a little bit famous, whatever. I don’t care that it’s normal,” Roan recently told fans on social media.

“I don’t want what you think you’re entitled to when you see a celebrity,” Roan shot back. “I don’t give a damn if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a picture or your time or a hug –– that’s not normal, that’s weird!”
