Chappell Roan Challenges Photographer on MTV VMAs Red Carpet

Chappell Roan stood up for himself at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards after an unpleasant encounter.

Roan, who makes her debut as a performer at the awards show tonight, posed on the red carpet in a medieval-inspired outfit. In a clip shared by Entertainment tonighta photographer appeared to tell her to “shut the fuck up” after she turned away from the camera. The “Hot To Go” singer quickly responded, telling the photographer, “Shut the fuck up!” She added, “Don’t do that! Not me, bitch!” Someone in the background was heard encouraging her, saying, “Tell ’em, girl!”

When one of them asked him about the incident, Entertainment tonight Reporter, Roan explained: “It’s pretty overwhelming and pretty scary. I think for someone who… gets a lot of… anxiety from people yelling at you… the carpet is horrible.”

Roan added, “And I have to – I yelled back. I yelled back! You can’t yell at me like that!”

Last month, the pop star set boundaries on social media after experiencing alarming behavior from people claiming to be her fans. “For the past 10 years I’ve been building my project nonstop and it’s gotten to the point where I have to draw lines and set boundaries. I want to be an artist for a very long time,” she wrote in a seven-slide post shared to Instagram.

She continued, “I’ve had too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I just need to explain and remind you that women don’t owe you anything. I chose this career path because I love music and art and honor my inner child. I will not tolerate harassment of any kind because I chose this path and I don’t deserve it.”

In the caption, Roan noted, “If you see me as a bitch or ungrateful or if my entire statement upsets you, baby, that’s you… you need to look inside and ask yourself ‘wait, why is this so upsetting to me? Why is a girl speaking her fears and boundaries so frustrating?'”
