CeeDee Lamb gets $136M contract from Cowboys to end holdout

CeeDee Lamb’s patience paid off.

The Cowboys star receiver agreed to a four-year, $136 million contract extension Monday, with a record $38 million signing bonus, ending his holdout, ESPN reported.

Lamb becomes the second-highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history with an average annual value (AAV) of $34 million, slightly lower than Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson’s $35 million AAV.

According to ESPN, his contract also includes a guaranteed $100 million.

The 25-year-old Lamb was entering the final year of his $17.991 million rookie contract, but the former Oklahoma star wanted a new deal that would put him among his peers.

This offseason has been in the hands of wide receivers, with Jefferson, Amon Ra-St. Brown, DJ Moore and AJ Brown among the 11 signing contract extensions, according to ESPN.

Lamb has proven himself to be one of the NFL’s best players throughout his career, and he’s coming off a sensational 2023 season in which he caught 135 passes for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, ranking first, second and third in the NFL in those categories.

He also set new Cowboys records for catches and yards.

In his career, Lamb has caught 395 passes for 5,145 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Lamb decided to wait for his new contract during training camp, with the general feeling being that the parties would eventually find a deal that worked for both parties.

That’s not to say there weren’t bumps along the way.

Jerry Jones said earlier this month that he felt no rush to make a deal, which Lamb subsequently quoted on Twitter with an “lol” above a tweet with Jones’ quote.

Jones eventually backtracked on his comments and made it clear the team wanted to sign him as details of the proposed offers emerged.

However, Lamb indicated that the ball was in Dallas’ court.

“Still waiting for that call,” Lamb posted on Instagram Saturday, “but until then, we’re rolling.”

The Cowboys apparently picked up the phone and the sides reached a deal that gave Lamb a historic guarantee to make up for just missing Jefferson’s record.

He now has 13 days to practice before the Cowboys open the season with a road game against the Browns.

The Cowboys are trying to regain the NFC East championship and bounce back after last year’s first-round playoff defeat to the Packers.

With Lamb signed, Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase and the 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk are the two star receivers still seeking contract extensions with their teams as Week 1 approaches.
