    Candice Bergen’s JD Vance joke and politics provide laughs at Emmys

    Awards ceremonies and political commentary are often unavoidable co-hosts at major awards shows, and the 2024 Emmys were no exception.

    Candice Bergen, who presented the award for best actress in a comedy series (to Jean Smart, who won for the third time for “Hacks”), used her time behind the microphone for ironic but cutting political humor.

    The five-time Emmy winner and star of shows like “Murphy Brown” and movies like “Miss Congeniality” recounted the time during the airing of her beloved sitcom that then-Republican Vice President Dan Quayle spoke out against “Murphy” after the unmarried character, played by Bergen, became pregnant and decided to raise the baby alone.

    She then made a loaded joke about the current Republican vice presidential nominee, J.D. Vance, without even mentioning his name.

    “Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having children. So as they say, my work here is done. Meow.”

    The double-barreled joke played on Vance’s earlier comments that only women with families cared about the nation’s fate. He also complained that the nation was being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”

    Other Emmy hosts and winners couldn’t resist using their time in the spotlight to make their own political jokes, many of them touching on the same cat theme.

    “The Bear” actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who won Best Supporting Actor, said: “Thank you to my parents. They take such good care of my cat.”

    When Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez took the stage, the “Only Murders In The Building” stars also made a joke about a cat.

    “Steve, I just want to tell you what an honor it is for me to work with someone who looks like he fell and can’t get up,” Short said.

    “And I want to tell you what an honor it is for me to be able to collaborate with someone who looks like a former female tennis champion,” Martin said.

    Then Gomez said, “And let me just say what an honor it is to work with two guys who this far away from childless cat ladies.”

    ‘The Bear’ star Liza Colon-Zayas urges viewers to vote

    Others approached politics more directly.

    Liza Colón-Zayas, who plays chef Tina Marrero on “The Bear,” got emotional after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. It was seen as a surprise, as most pundits had predicted Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”) or Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”).

    Colón-Zayas seemed equally surprised, admitting that she had not prepared a speech, despite her husband’s encouragement.

    But after thanking many colleagues and some friends, she ended her speech with a simple plea to both parties: “Thank you for giving me new life with this show, and to all the Latinas watching me, keep the faith and vote. Vote for your rights.”

    Jon Stewart to Speak Out About Trump’s Second Assassination Attempt at the 2024 Emmys

    Jon Stewart resumed his Emmy-winning ways on Sunday night, picking up where he left off after winning 11 similar awards during the height of his original show’s tenure by winning the trophy for best talk show.

    The host, who recently spent one day a week behind the desk commenting on the current election campaign, was the first to address Sunday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the second in recent months.

    “Look, we live in terrible times,” Stewart told reporters in the press room after his victory. “I think the one rule that we could all benefit from in terms of engagement is don’t shoot. No matter how angry you are, who you don’t like, who you hate, I believe that instituting a no-shoot policy would be the way to slow things down a bit.”
