Caitlin Clark Names a Surprising Player Who Left Her Star-Studded on the Field

Of all the WNBA players Caitlin Clark has faced on the court this season, she had especially high (and perhaps surprising) praise for one recent opponent.

When the Indiana Fever lost 90-80 to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday night, Clark and the Fever quickly found out they had no answer for Lynx forward Napheesa Collier.

Collier scored a season-high 31 points and added five rebounds in Minnesota’s win, marking her third straight game in which she scored 23 or more points. The four-time All-Star punished the Fever’s sometimes-slack defense all night with smooth jumpers and aggressive drives in the paint, and Collier’s stellar performance caught Clark’s attention after the game.

“She’s the pillar of the team, she does so much for the team,” Clark said of Collier in a postgame press conference. “There were a couple times where she made a couple shots and I caught myself thinking, ‘Damn. I can’t defend that.’ And I don’t do that very often.

“She made a tough run on the left side in the second half, I think, off the glass outside the paint, and AB played really good defense. There’s nothing you can do but take the ball down and go the other way and tell her she did a good job.”

Collier sat out the Lynx’ previous game against the Fever in July due to injury, when Indiana won 81-74. The 27-year-old was perhaps one of the biggest reasons Minnesota came away with a win this time around, as they likely outscored Clark, who finished the night with 23 points, five rebounds, eight assists and seven turnovers.

Clark did make history on Saturday, however, as the fastest player to reach 500 points and 200 assists in a single season in WNBA history (29 games). She is also the first rookie to do so.

The next game between the Fever and the Lynx will be on September 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
