Brian Kelly calls LSU loss to USC ‘unacceptable’ in post-game tirade

After suffering another painful defeat in the season opener, LSU coach Brian Kelly couldn’t contain his frustration.

During his press conference following Sunday’s 27-20 loss to USC in the Vegas Kickoff Classic, Kelly emphasized his point by slamming his fist on the table so hard he nearly knocked over his water bottle.

“Here we are again… here we are again,” Kelly said with a powerful clap, “and we’re talking about the same things, about not finishing when you have an opponent who is in a position to finish them off.”

LSU, ranked 12th in the preseason LBM Coaches Poll, had a four-point lead with less than six minutes to play, but couldn’t stop the 23rd-ranked Trojans from running the length of the field in the final two minutes and scoring the game-winning touchdown.

Kelly admitted it was the first time in his three years as LSU’s head coach that he was so dissatisfied with his team.

“I’m so angry about it that I have to do something about it. I’m not doing a good enough job as a coach,” Kelly said. “I have to coach them better because it’s unacceptable that we didn’t find a way to win this football game. It’s ridiculous.”

The loss ended a dubious streak for the Tigers, who have lost their opening game each of the past five seasons.

Particularly frustrating for Kelly and LSU was that the winning score was set up by a 15-yard targeting penalty on Tigers safety Jardin Gilbert that moved the ball to the Tigers’ 13-yard line. On the next play, USC’s Woody Marks sprinted 13 yards into the end zone to break a 20-20 tie and secure the Trojans’ victory.
