The Brandon Aiyuk contract saga is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for all parties involved.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on it and how Aiyuk and his agent, Ryan Williams, should proceed. Including fellow NFL agents.

The Athletic recently spoke with 31 unnamed agents about the latest contract situations in the NFL, and several of them offered their thoughts on the current state of Aiyuk’s negotiations.

Ask:49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk went public with his desire for a new contract extension this summer. What advice do you give your clients when they’re faced with similar issues?

“I’m all for keeping negotiations quiet, but it’s not always easy,” one agent told The Athletic. “I think (public displays) do a player more harm than good.”

“He handled it terribly, but sometimes you have to air your grievances,” said another officer. “Stupid, yes, but removing the team name or logo from social media accounts can cause quite a stir.”

“If you have leverage, do what you want to do,” a third officer said. “You’re your own person. You can hurt the case, but I don’t think (Aiyuk) is better off financially for what he did.”

“Every situation is different. In most cases, you’re more likely to get the result you want if you handle things behind the scenes with the club,” added a fourth agent. “However, in some cases, when you’ve exhausted all other options, it may be worth making the situation so uncomfortable for the club that they conclude that giving the player what they want or moving the player is the best option for them. In this case, Aiyuk is loud and Trent Williams is quiet. Whichever one San Francisco rewards is likely to be the strategy good agents will use moving forward.”

It’s no secret that the negotiations haven’t gone as Aiyuk and the 49ers had hoped. Both coach Kyle Shanahan and president of football operations/general manager John Lynch recently expressed disappointment with the state of the negotiations.

While there may be some blame, one NFL agent believes Aiyuk should take most of the blame.
