The quest for the 2024 World Series begins Tuesday as the final games of the MLB regular season begin to wrap up. With a few games left to play, spots still need to be determined before the play-off round can be completed.

The American League playoffs begin with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros, respectively, seeding in the top three, while the Yankees and Guardians earn byes in the first round. The Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals have secured the three wild card spots.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who have the best record in the major leagues after using more than 40 different pitchers this season, earned the No. 1 seed and home field advantage. The Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres have secured seeds two through four in the National League, with the No. 2 Phillies joining the Dodgers with a first-round bye.

But there are still two play-off places to sort out.

The National League play-offs are up for grabs

The New York Mets, Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks are still battling for the final two wild card spots in the National League. The Mets and Braves will play an NL East doubleheader on Monday after games were canceled due to Hurricane Helene.

The Diamondbacks are currently on the outside looking in and will have to wait and see how things turn out. The Mets hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over Arizona.

Here’s an overview of each scenario:

∎ If the Braves can hold their own: Atlanta must win one of two games during the doubleheader against New York on Monday.

∎ The Mets can establish themselves as: New York must win one of two games during the doubleheader against Atlanta on Monday.

∎ The Diamondbacks can establish themselves as: Arizona needs either the Mets or the Braves to beat the other in Monday’s doubleheader.
