Bear fire west of North Reno threatens hundreds of homes

Update from 4:30pm: The Bear Fire has grown by nearly 500 acres since Tuesday morning.

The smoke plume from the fire near Loyalton, California, is much more visible in Northern Nevada Tuesday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the fire is about 40 miles north of Truckee and is now 1,578 acres in size.

The fire started around 2 p.m. on Labor Day and quickly spread amid windy, hot and dry conditions in the Sierra. The blaze continues to threaten hundreds of homes. Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service have not released information about a possible cause.

According to the Sierra County Department of Public Works and Transportation, all outdoor irrigation has been halted and county officials are asking people to conserve water indoors during the Bear Fire.

Original post: The Bear Fire, burning about 40 miles west of Reno’s North Valleys, was nearly 1,400 acres as of Tuesday morning. The blaze, which started around 2 p.m. on Labor Day, was threatening hundreds of homes.

The fire started near Loyalton, California, a rural community in the Sierra Valley, and spread quickly, fanned by winds late Monday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no statements have yet been made about the suspected cause.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, 536 homes and nearly 300 buildings are threatened. The fire has also caused power outages to 760 homes in the area.

The smoke plumes could be seen from Reno on Monday, and emergency alerts about the California fire were sent to scores in Northern Nevada. The area is a popular recreation area for Washoe County residents.
