Thousands of Bank of America customers reported problems accessing their bank accounts Wednesday afternoon as the financial institution suffered a widespread outage.

On social media, customers said they couldn’t see their account balance. Those who were able to view their accounts said they had an alarming balance of $0.

Many experienced a ‘Connection Error’ message while trying to log into the banking app. The message said it “couldn’t complete your request” and asked the user to “try again later.”

As of 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time, nearly 20,000 customers said they were experiencing problems, according to Downdetector, which reports internet outages. That number dropped before rising again around 2:45 PM ET.

It is unclear what caused the outage

In a statement, a Bank of America spokesperson said: “Some customers today are experiencing difficulty accessing their accounts and balance information. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Customers affected by the outage flocked to social media platforms, such as X and Reddit, to confirm they were experiencing similar issues.

Many reported having trouble reaching Bank of America customer service.

Bank of America suffered a disruption last summer when CrowdStrike, the global cybersecurity company, suffered a massive crash due to a flawed update.
