Astros star posts cryptic three-word comment after possible final game with Houston

Alex Bregman may see the writing on the wall.

The Houston Astros were kicked out of the postseason on Wednesday afternoon after being defeated in a wild-card series by the Detroit Tigers in a 5-2 loss.

The loss marks the first time since 2014 that the Astros have not played in an American League Division Series and the first time since 2016 that they have not been in the final four.

Bregman was part of all seven trips to the championship series, the second-longest streak in MLB history behind the 1990s Atlanta Braves.

But he will become a free agent once the season is over, and Wednesday may have been his last game as an Astro.

However, it seems like the third baseman feels like it’s a matter of when, not if, it becomes official.

After the Houston loss, Bregman went to X to write what seemed like a farewell.

“Thank you Houston,” Bregman wrote.

Bregman was picked off defensively last week in the Astros’ final home game of the regular season to a standing ovation, with fans and manager Joe Espada clearly understanding the circumstances.

In recent years, the Astros have seen players like Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Correa and George Springer leave in free agency. Verlander was traded back to Houston last year.

When the Houston story is over, it’s certainly a good story. Bregman earned All-Star nods in 2018 and 2019, when he finished fifth and second, respectively, in the AL MVP voting. In nine seasons, he is a .272 hitter with an .848 OPS.

He also has some hardware, with four pennants and two World Series rings, although his first is considered tainted by many critics due to the team’s sign-stealing scandal.

This season he hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. His average over 162 games is 28 home runs and 97 runs batted in.
