Are Garrett Nussmeier and Doug Nussmeier Related? What You Need to Know

While making his prediction for this year’s College Football Playoff field on last week’s episode of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” former Alabama football coach Nick Saban made a statement that may have piqued the interest of LSU football fans.

“I think (LSU quarterback Garrett) Nussmeier is going to be one of the dormant quarterbacks in college football this year,” Saban said on “GameDay” on Saturday.

Quite a statement from a seven-time national championship coach about a quarterback who has only started one game in his college career, right? Maybe, but history has shown that you shouldn’t doubt the Hall of Fame coach.

Sunday’s early-season heavyweight showdown against No. 23 USC will mark Garrett Nussmeier’s second career start and first as the Tigers’ full-time starting quarterback as he looks to lead No. 12 LSU to a season opener for the first time under Kelly. Nussmeier’s lone career start came in the ReliaQuest Bowl, as Daniels sat out following his Heisman Trophy-winning season.

As Nussmeier attempts to parse the X’s and O’s of the Trojans’ defense, those who follow football closely — both at the NFL and college level — may be wondering: Why does his last name sound familiar?

Here’s what you need to know about whether LSU’s new starting quarterback is related to Doug Nussmeier and more:

Is Garrett Nussmeier related to Doug Nussmeier?

Who is Garrett Nussmeier?

Garrett Nussmeier begins his first season as LSU’s starting quarterback, taking over for Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

He is from Lake Charles, Louisiana, but played high school football for Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He was named to the Under Armour All-American game in 2020 after throwing for 2,815 yards and 33 touchdowns his senior year.

While Sunday’s showdown against USC will mark Garrett Nussmeier’s first real start as LSU’s starting quarterback, it won’t be his first time starting, as he started LSU’s bowl game against Wisconsin last season after Daniels declared for the NFL draft. In that 35-31 win over the Badgers, Garrett Nussmeier powered through a game-winning 98-yard drive to give LSU its second bowl victory under Kelly.

Check out that drive, which left Garrett Nussmeier tied for 31st with 45 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns and earned him ReliaQuest Bowl MVP honors:
