Apple makes trade-in price offer before pre-orders begin

Apple just confirmed details about how you can upgrade to the new iPhone, with trade-in deals starting this Friday, September 13. That’s when pre-orders open, at 5 a.m. Pacific. Whether you buy outright or opt for a financing option or a carrier deal, you can do so directly through Apple. And the credit you get from trading in can be put toward the Apple Watch or AirPods, as well as the iPhone.

That’s a good idea, because there have been disturbing amounts of scams coming to light lately, as Forbes Senior Contributor Kate O’Flaherty writes about here.

Buying direct from Apple eliminates any fear of getting ripped off. And the options for saving money aren’t bad either. Apple’s latest newsroom post says that the “iPhone holds its value better than any other smartphone, making it even more valuable when customers trade in an old device.” Customers can get $180 to $650 in credit when they trade in an iPhone 12 or later, or up to $1,000 in credit to spend on iPhone 16 Pro with a carrier promotion.

“Apple Specialists can help customers choose the right model for them, set up and activate their new iPhone with select U.S. carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and for the first time, Boost Mobile — all directly from Apple.”

By the way, in the UK, if you buy an iPhone 16 Pro, you can trade in an iPhone 12 or later for between £180 and £645 in credit.

While pre-orders don’t begin until Friday, September 13, “customers have until 9 p.m. PDT tonight (Thursday, September 12) to get started pre-ordering the new iPhone 16 series by choosing the model they want, selecting their preferred payment method — including pre-approval for financing — and saving their cart, so they’re just one click away once pre-orders open tomorrow,” Apple said.

You can also trade in older iPhones, all the way back to the iPhone 7 Plus, but the maximum trade-in value you’ll get for that is $40 or £30 in the UK.

With the trade-in program, you get a discount on an upgrade or an Apple Gift Card that you can use on any product at any time.

And, as Apple notes, a new service will be offered this fall where customers who buy direct from Apple can get one-on-one sessions with an Apple Specialist for additional help setting up their new iPhone.
