BARROW COUNTY, Ga. – Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, was placed on strict lockdown Wednesday morning following a shooting incident, according to government officials.

FOX 5 Atlanta received multiple calls and messages about a possible shooting before it was officially confirmed.

SkyFOX 5 flew over the scene and emergency responders were seen treating people inside the school. At least two people were lifted into helicopters to be flown to hospitals for treatment. Dozens of police officers and ambulances were also seen outside the school.

Grady Memorial Hospital confirmed at 12:20 p.m. that they had received a victim of a school shooting. No other information was released.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., the school told FOX News that the school had been evacuated and students were being sent home to their families. Students can be picked up at the school. Buses will also be available for students who need transportation home. The school said it will share more information as soon as possible.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to FOX News around 11:30 a.m. that there was an active shooter earlier this morning and that multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency responders were dispatched to the school around 10:30 a.m. They also confirmed that one person was arrested.

In addition, Barrow-Winder High School was briefly placed in a strict lockdown, but that has since been lifted.

The FBI has also confirmed that they have been on the scene.

FBI Atlanta is aware of the current situation at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Our agents are on scene working with and supporting local law enforcement.

Additionally, Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement about X:

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting by Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall and that his administration is working with federal, state and local officials.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the school has an enrollment of approximately 1,900 students. It is one of two high schools in the Barrow County Public Schools district.

The school is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
