    The MTV Video Music Awards red carpet is always a time to make a big statement, and we love seeing stars get creative and attempt to make red carpet history. At the 2024 VMAs, held at UBS Stadium in New York City, some stars opted for stunts, others for veils — but these stars made big statements with throwbacks and killer pop culture references.

    From Sabrina Carpenter in Madonna’s vintage Bob Mackie to Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae showing off their best Britney looks, check out all the iconic fashion references from the Video Music Awards.

    Tate McRae: Britney Spears

    Oops, Tate McRae did it again! Brought back Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 VMAs minidress, no less. McRae — who says it’s an “honor” to draw comparisons to the pop diva — wore a Roberto Cavalli gown over Fleur du Mal lingerie that was similar to Spears’ navy minidress from the year she performed “Slave 4 U” with Banana the Snake.

    Halsey: Elizabeth Hurley

    “It was truly a miracle to find this dress,” Halsey said during the VMAs pre-show of her scarlet leopard gown. “This dress was designed by Gianni Versace for Elizabeth Hurley in 1996 and has not been worn since. So from 1996 to now, and I’m just living off it. I love it.”

    Lil Nas X: Pink Power Ranger

    She may be a mother of two and a business guru these days, but Paris Hilton couldn’t possibly pull off a slinky silver chainmail suit and not remind us of her early 2000s party outfit and her oft-imitated, never-before-seen 21st birthday dress.

    Megan Thee Stallion: Beyoncé

    The evening’s host, Megan Thee Stallion, joked that she borrowed her Olympic leotard from Simone Biles herself, but another gold medal-worthy lookalike has surfaced online: Beyoncé’s sexy look for her Olympic promotional video.
