Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — watch out, don’t say his name three times! Director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his comedy-horror classic about the afterlife and its wildest demon is finally here. And there are plenty of nods to the 1988 film that started it all.

Their resumption Beetle juice The sequel’s cast includes Michael Keaton in the title role, Winona Ryder as the “weird and unusual” Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as her artistic stepmother, Delia. Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, while Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Danny DeVito and Willem Dafoe co-star.

The opening sequence

Beetle juice took the audience to the suburban Connecticut town of Winter River and its charming covered bridges. Both the original film and its sequel feature an opening credits sequence set to the music of composer Danny Elfman that introduces us to the town — only to fold out to reveal that it is a miniature model of the town in the attic of the Deetz family home.

Later in Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceAstrid swerves to avoid danger on the streets of Winter River while riding her bike, much like Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’ Adam and Barbara Maitland do in the original. During that episode, the pair meet a rather morbid fate, introducing us to the afterlife and kicking off what is now a two-part film franchise.

Delia’s Dangerous Sculptures

O’Hara’s character stormed in Beetle juice with a fantastic wardrobe, an aversion to the countryside, and several abstract metal sculptures — later brought to life by the demonic magic of Betelgeuse. While not as dangerous in the sequel, these works of art appear at Astrid’s boarding school, where it’s clear that her now-famous grandmother wields influence as the namesake of the art center.

Fun fact: In 2023, during the filming of Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceOne of Delia’s prop sculptures was stolen from the set in East Corinth, Vermont.

“Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)”

O’Hara confirmed last March that Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” would be reused in the sequel, following the memorable musical moment in the original, in which Delia and her dinner guests danced and lip-synced to the tune to induce a ghostly possession.

Not long after, fans got a glimpse of how Burton recaptured the song’s magic. As the sequel’s teaser trailer revealed, a children’s choir sings the Belafonte classic in a slower, more mournful manner during the funeral of Charles Deetz (played by Jeffrey Jones in the original).

The Recently Deceased (and their waiting room)

Burton and his production teams’ imaginations run wild in the Beetle juice cinematic universe, set in a bureaucratic afterlife where the recently deceased await their administrative fate. Characters and puppets bearing the marks of their death are seen with shrunken heads, sickly colored or blue from suffocation or other ailments and even sawn in half with different body parts functioning separately.

It wouldn’t be Beetle juice sequel with no winks to those original inventions, executed with practical rather than computer-generated effects. Burton pushes the conceit even further: a character is clearly seen killed in an underwater magic trick gone wrong, while another, eaten by piranhas, still leaves the wobbling fish gnawing at his flesh. Meanwhile, the googly-eyed, shrunken-headed men play a prominent role in the second film — including Betelgeuse’s lovable, mute assistant, Bob.

The sandworms

The space between the afterlife and the mortal plane in Beetle juice is a science fiction-inspired desert populated by vicious — stop-motion animated! — sandworms. Baldwin and Davis’ characters go from fleeing in fear to using the creatures to prevent Betelgeuse’s wedding to teenage Lydia.

In the new film, it’s Lydia and her daughter Astrid who enter that dreamlike space, and use the worms as a weapon again at a crucial moment. “It was a lot of sand and a lot of wind,” Ryder said Entertainment weekly in August. “I think it’s common knowledge that it’s very difficult to run in the sand. I used to have dreams where you were running in the sand, so that was it.”

Jane Butterfield

Little Jane, introduced in Beetle juice as the daughter of ambitious realtor Jane Butterfield (Annie McEnroe), is now all grown up. With Amy Nuttall replacing young Rachel Mittelman, it’s clear that selling houses — haunted or not — is a family tradition.

Lydia’s red wedding dress

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice saves its biggest visual reference for the story’s climax. Lydia’s pleated red wedding dress from the original makes a reappearance in the sequel, as she is once again forced to marry Keaton’s dastardly demon, who once again dons his vain tuxedo in a deeper shade of red.

The dress, by Oscar-winning costume designer and frequent Burton collaborator Colleen Atwood, is iconic enough to warrant a tribute from Ortega on the red carpet at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where the sequel had its world premiere on August 28.

Musical numbers with possessed choreography

Now that “Day-O” has been repurposed, audiences may be wondering if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice recreates a musical number in which characters sing and dance through possession. Jimmy Webb’s delightfully absurd “MacArthur Park” proves to be the perfect fit, with Lydia, Astrid, Delia and more lip-syncing the tune while under Betelgeuse’s control at his wedding. And yes, there’s a cake in the rain.
