Al Roker’s awkward moment on the radio with Lenny Kravitz after Today host mocks the singer’s guitarist

Al Roker was criticized by Lenny Kravitz on Thursday morning’s Today Show after he mocked the singer’s guitarist during a live broadcast. It happened in a rather awkward moment.

Lenny, 60, performed live with his band at the Today Plaza and chatted with Al, 70, and co-hosts Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer between songs, but he wasn’t too impressed with any of the weatherman’s comments.

When Craig, 45, took the time to thank Lenny’s band, Al joked, “And you’ve got Howard Stern playing guitar,” referring to the musician’s striking resemblance to the controversial radio host.

Al’s co-hosts laughed awkwardly and we heard Lenny say, “Uhhhhhhhh,” as Al walked over to the musician and quickly asked, “What’s your name again?” But he remained silent and simply responded by strumming his guitar.

“That was good!” Sheinelle told Carson Daly before the show cut, who was eager to talk about the 2024 MTV VMAs, but not before mocking his co-host by saying, “Al, you’re off to a good start this morning. You had me on Friday, but now the guitarist hates you….”

Carson, 51, referenced another gaffe Al made earlier on the show, when he accidentally said it was Friday instead of Thursday.

When his cohosts corrected him, Al exclaimed, “Well, it feels like Friday! Lenny Kravitz makes every day feel like the weekend!”

Lenny and Al are actually blood relatives, as the TV presenter was a second cousin of Lenny’s mother Roxie Roker, who sadly passed away in December 1995.

Earlier in the show, Lenny admitted that it felt “great” to be back at Today Plaza, saying, “I grew up in New York City, my parents worked at Rockefeller Center and met at NBC, so I grew up around all these buildings and in this great city, so it’s always nice to be here.”

Savannah Guthrie responded, “Can we all just say we’re family now?” before adding, “I know you have cousin Al,” referring to their family ties.

Lenny also shared how special it was for him to be back at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night, as he had once attended the annual event with his mother before she passed away.

“As I said when I was there 31 years ago when I won Best Male Video, my mother was there and that was the last awards show – and the first – that she ever attended before she passed away. So it meant a lot to me last night and I dedicated it to my mother,” he said as the crowd cheered.

The father of one took to the stage at New York’s UBS Arena for a live performance and later accepted the award for Best Rock Video for his song Human, in honor of his late mother.

When Al asked the guitarist his name, the musician remained silent and simply began strumming his guitar.

“Wow, this is incredible, I’m so grateful,” the Fly Away hitmaker said.

‘Thirty-one years ago, my mother was with me at an awards show, at the VMAs, so I dedicate this to her.’

“I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life,” he added.

Roxie was an actress best known for her role as Helen Willis on The Jeffersons. She also appeared in television series such as All in the Family, Fantasy Island, A Different World, 227 and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.
