A League of Their Own and Eight Men Out Baseball Stadium Destroyed by Fire | California

A historic Southern California baseball field featured in A League of Their Own and other films has been destroyed by fire.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Jay Littleton Ball Park in the city of Ontario, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, at 11:25 p.m. Thursday.

“By the time they got here, which was pretty quick, the structure was completely destroyed,” said Dan Bell, the city’s communications director.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said. No injuries were reported.

The “traditional, old-school bleachers” date back to 1937, Bell said. The structure stood behind home plate and extended down the first- and third-base lines.

The 1992 film A League of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Lori Petty, told the story of a professional women’s baseball team in the 1940s.

Other notable films filmed at the stadium, according to the city, include Eight Men Out and The Babe Ruth Story.

Since the 1930s, families have made “countless, cherished memories” at the stadium, U.S. Representative for the area Norma J. Torres said in a statement.

“The stadium’s legacy lives on in the hearts of its visitors and through the films that feature it,” Torres said.
