49ers forward Ricky Pearsall is in stable condition after being shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco

Ricky Pearsall, the San Francisco 49ers’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was shot Saturday during an attempted robbery in San Francisco’s Union Square, according to a statement from the San Francisco Police Department.

Pearsall is reportedly in stable condition and the suspect is in custody. On Sunday morning, his mother Erin Pearsall posted on Facebook that he had been shot in the chest, but the bullet did not hit any vital organs.

After the shooting, Pearsall posted a video on social media showing him walking toward an ambulance while covering a chest wound.

The Niners released a statement Saturday confirming that Pearsall was the victim of an alleged attempted robbery, describing his condition as “serious but stable” after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest:

“He has a gunshot wound to his chest and is in a serious but stable condition. We ask that you respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”

Police told KTXL’s Sean Cunningham that Pearsall was shot after a struggle over a gun with a suspect who allegedly tried to steal a Rolex watch while Pearsall was at a book signing. The suspect was also reportedly shot in the chest and is currently in stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital, where Pearsall is being treated.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Police Chief William Scott both released statements confirming and responding to the news. The news comes at a time when crime in San Francisco is a hot topic (data so far this year shows that robberies are down 22 percent).

Shot later revealed during a press conference The suspect is a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, who is believed to have been alone. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said the state will file charges in juvenile court “at this time.”

The Niners selected Pearsall with the 31st overall pick in the draft, adding him to a wide receiver room that already included All-Pros Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Shortly after the shooting was reported, Samuel tweeted that Pearsall was “fine.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White, who played with Pearsall at Arizona State, also posted a comment to be shocked.

Pearsall played his collegiate career at Arizona State and Florida, recording 965 receiving yards and six total touchdowns in his final season with the Gators. He was primarily viewed as a second-round prospect entering the draft, but was well-regarded for his route running and soft hands as a slot receiver.

Injuries have limited Pearsall’s first NFL training camp thus far, as he spent time on the reserve/non-football injured list with a hamstring injury and worked through a shoulder injury after being activated. It’s unclear how much time he will miss because of his gunshot wound.
