49ers extend lead to 16-7 before halftime

The 49ers will be without running back Christian McCaffrey in the lineup against the Jets on Monday night, but they still managed to take a lead into halftime at Levi’s Stadium.

Deebo Samuel ran for a touchdown and Jake Moody kicked three field goals to put them ahead 16-7 after 30 minutes of play. Moody’s final kick came in the closing seconds of the second quarter, and it came two plays after wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk failed to make a diving catch of a pass from Brock Purdy in the end zone.

McCaffrey was unexpectedly scratched with calf and Achilles injuries that landed him on the injury report, but Jordan Mason has stepped up in his place. Mason has rushed 11 times for 74 yards and Purdy is 9 of 16 for 106 yards.

Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson had four touchdowns while the Jets grabbed five first downs on a 70-yard scoring drive in the first quarter, but the Jets haven’t picked up any other first downs so far. They’ve picked up 13 yards off the scoring drive and running back Breece Hall lost a fumble to set up the 49ers’ first field goal, so the offense hasn’t been very consistent.

Rodgers was tackled once by Leonard Floyd, but he appears to be okay with the Achilles tendon he tore when tackled by Floyd in last season’s season opener.

The Jets had cornerback Sauce Gardner sit out for Moody’s final field goal and told ESPN it wasn’t for medical reasons. Gardner was back on the field for the final incompletions leading up to Moody’s kick.
