10 Interesting Facts About The Legendary Actor

Hollywood has lost a legend, James Earl Jones, who we remember as an acting icon and the voice of Mufasa in The Lion King and Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, among so many other accomplishments. Jones died Monday morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York. He was 93.

The accolades were endless for James Earl Jones. He was a two-time Primetime Emmy Award winner (including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Gabriel’s Fire in 1991). He has won two Tony Awards and one Golden Globe Award. He received an honorary Oscar at the 2011 Governors Awards. And Jones received the Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre Award at the 2017 Tony Awards, among other honors.

His memorable film roles included: Conan the Barbarian, Coming to America, Claudine And The field of dreams. And his work transcended all platforms. But in a career spanning more than 60 years, there are a few things you may not know about James Earl Jones.

Let’s go back in time for a moment:

1) James Earl Jones was of course known for his deep, booming voice. But when George Lucas cast the voice of Darth Vader in Star WarsOrson Welles was the first choice. However, Lucas was concerned that Welles would be too well-known, and James Earl Jones got the job.

2) Early in his career, in the mid-1960s, Jones guest-starred on two drama series: Leading light And While the world turns.

3) Jones’ first film appearance was in the 1964 film Doctor StrangeloveThe film was a political satire, co-written, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, and Jones played Lieutenant Lothar Zogg. Peter Sellers played the lead role.

4) In 1969, Jones participated in the making of test films for Sesame Streetwho played an important role in what would become the format of the educational children’s series.

5) Jones was the second African-American male actor after Sidney Poitier to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category for The Great White Hope in 1970. The winner that year was George C. Scott for Patton.

6) In 1977, Jones won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Recording for Great American Documents.

7) Jones had regular roles in five television series, all dramas, during his career. They were Crime Solver Paris (1979-80); Me and mom (1985), which lasted only six episodes and was set in a private investigation service; crime drama Gabriel’s Fire (1990-91); also crime theme Pros and cons (1991-92); and family drama Under one roof (1995). None of the five series received a second season.

8) James Earl Jones also narrated the opening of the first season of the wacky comedy 3rd rock from the sun. “As many intelligent people know, aliens are all around us. This is the story of four such explorers. In order to blend in, they have taken on human form. This is the High Commander (Dick)He has assembled an elite team of experts; a decorated military (Sally)an experienced intelligence specialist (Tommy)and, well, they had an extra chair (Harry).”

9) Additionally, James Earl Jones lent his voice to CNN’s slogan, “This is CNN.”

10) In the 1990s, Jones voiced several characters in animated series The Simpsons in three separate seasons.

“James was an incredible actor, a very unique voice, both in art and in spirit. For almost half a century he was Darth Vader, but the secret of it all is that he was a beautiful human being. He brought depth, sincerity and meaning to all of his roles, the most important of which was being a devoted husband to the late Ceci and father to Flynn. James will be missed by so many of us… friends and fans,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas, in a statement.

“This man was the living embodiment of artistry, integrity, creativity and dignity. James Earl Jones is the only reason I became an actor,” actor Wendell Pierce wrote on X. “He awakened a calling in me that gave voice to the songs of my heart that were unsung. By his example, he led me to explore my own personal humanity and to study the human behavior of others and the elusive, ever-present soul. He was a once-in-a-generation talent who has left an enormous legacy in American culture.”
