🏆 Columbus Crew Narrowly Surprises LAFC to Win Leagues Cup

The Columbus Crew became Leagues Cup champions thanks to two stoppage-time goals, upsetting LAFC in a rematch of the 2023 MLS Cup final.

Goalscorers: Hernández 43′, 90+2′ Russell-Rowe 90+4′ ; Giroud 57′

LAFC looked anxious in the first 45 minutes as Columbus dominated the ball and created most of the chances in front of goal.

Just when the Crew needed a big moment to score a goal while still having the upper hand, that call was answered by talisman Cucho Hernández, who raced into the penalty area and headed the ball in beautifully, opening the scoring.

It seemed that the visitors had been woken up by coach Steve Cherundolo during the break and they started the second half in high spirits.

When Columbus’ star man emerged at halftime, it was Olivier Giroud’s turn to do the same for LAFC. In his first start for the club, the Frenchman headed home to level the scores and put himself on the scene before the hour mark.

The battle between the star players continued into the final minutes, but this time it was Cucho Hernández who played a major role again. A deflected cross to the back post seemed to surprise Hugo Lloris when the ball was not touched on its way into the net in injury time.

But the Crew weren’t done yet, as a few minutes later they caught LAFC shooting up the numbers and took third place, their second trophy in as many years.

Both teams now turn their attention back to MLS and it is no surprise that they will meet again in the MLS Cup final in December.
