A geomagnetic storm forecast for parts of the country Thursday and Friday evening will result in a majestic display of colors in the night sky. There were reports Thursday of northern lights being seen across New Jersey.

The NWS in Mount Holly reported seeing the Northern Lights on Thursday, and there were reports from across North Jersey on social media seeing the spectacle.

What are the Northern Lights?

A coral mass ejection (CME), an eruption of solar material and magnetic field, erupted from the sun on Wednesday evening and the effects could last into Thursday and Friday evening, according to NOAA.

On Tuesday, NOAA issued a G4 solar storm watch, the first since May earlier this year.

The green and red lights known as the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, can be seen in states further north, such as Washington, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Although New Jersey is not on the list, some residents of the Garden State were able to see the Northern Lights this past week before the geomagnetic storm.

Last May, some New Jersey residents were lucky enough to witness the display of the latest geomagnetic field.

The best time to view the Northern Lights is generally the light nighttime hours between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to NOAA. Those who want to see the spectacle can have the best viewpoint with ‘an unobstructed view towards the north’.

The New Jersey Astrology Group, which reported Northern Lights sights earlier this week, posts what may be the best areas to see the Northern Lights.
