Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn’t waste much time in ending the suspense over whether his team had a lateral eye-catcher planned during the first half of Monday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Patrick Mahomes completed a pass to Travis Kelce on 3rd-and-22, and the tight end then sent it to Samaje Perine. It left the Chiefs down a yard on a first down, and they eventually converted the ensuing fourth down before ending the drive with a field goal.

“We do it every day in practice,” Reid said when asked if the play was scheduled or not.

This isn’t the first time Kelce has lateraled a live ball after coming down on a fly ball.

Last season, he threw one back to Kadarius Toney during a showdown with the Buffalo Bills. It was about what would have been the go-ahead goal in the final minutes and certainly the play of the year, but it was negated by Toney lining up in the neutral zone before the break.

The last time Chiefs-Bills played was week 14…
Kadarius Toney was offside on the play that saw Kelce lateralize what could have been a GW TD 😭

In short, Chiefs running backs and wide receivers need to keep their heads on a swivel when playing with Kelce. He can release a lateral at any time, especially if he sees the opening and the team has been working on such plays in practice.

The Saints were not ready for Monday’s game and the result was a long win.
