When Daylight Saving Time Ends Comes Back – NBC Chicago

As the calendar shifts to October and the Chicago area begins to see cooler temperatures and chilly nights, it’s natural to wonder when daylight saving time will end.

The annual spring ritual gives the area extra daylight at the end of the day, but the biennial clock change is just around the corner, meaning sunset will come earlier as winter approaches.

Here’s what you need to know.

When does daylight saving time end?

According to the provisions of the Uniform Time Law, daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday of the month of November.

This year that date falls on Sunday, November 3, with the clocks going back one hour at 2 a.m. While this means the sunset jumps back, it also means an extra hour of sleep, which is probably welcome news.

What other milestones are coming up?

On October 17, the city will experience 11 hours of daylight, and the sun will set before 6 p.m. just two days later, on October 19.

The earliest sunset of the year will occur in early December, setting around 4:19 PM for several days, before slowly returning later in the day as the month progresses.

Sunrise will continue to occur later in the morning, meaning the city will see less daylight each day until December 21, when Chicago will gain nine hours and seven minutes of daylight, slowly gaining a matter of seconds each day after that.

When will daylight saving time return?

Daylight saving time will make its welcome return to the Chicago area on Sunday, March 9, the second Sunday in March.

By then, the city will experience almost 12 hours of daylight again and sunset will occur just after 7 p.m.
