Vanderbilt faces a $100,000 fine for field storming after the Alabama win

Vanderbilt Football faces a $100,000 fine from the SEC for fans storming the field Saturday — and it owes money to Alabama after the Commodores’ historic win against the No. 1 Crimson Tide.

That fine is in accordance with the SEC field storming policy adopted in June 2023, which also stated that fines are payable to the opposing institution. The updated SEC policy on entry into competition imposes fines on schools of $100,000 for their first violation, $250,000 for a second violation and $500,000 for a third violation.

Saturday marked Vanderbilt’s first offense after the Commodores defeated Alabama in a 40-35 victory at FirstBank Stadium, their first victory over an AP No. 1 opponent in school history. The updated policy restores schools’ previous record for fines. Fans tore down the goalpost in the south end zone amid the joyful celebrations that followed.

How much will Vanderbilt be fined for fans storming the field against Alabama?

Vanderbilt will be allocated $100,000 for Saturday’s field-storming celebration, although SEC commissioner Greg Sankey can impose additional fines if he deems it necessary.

Under the SEC’s previous policy, it would have been fined $250,000 for being a repeat offender for fans storming a playing surface.

Vanderbilt was fined $250,000 for fans storming the Memorial Gymnasium court after a win against Tennessee in February 2023. That was the school’s fourth such incident. Vanderbilt’s third incident occurred after the Commodores’ 2022 football victory over Florida, which also resulted in a $250,000 fine.

Previously, schools were fined $50,000 for a first violation, $100,000 for a second violation and $250,000 for a third violation and each subsequent violation. The money was donated to the SEC’s Post-graduate Scholarship Fund.

Tennessee defeated No. 1 Alabama for the first win over the top-ranked team in program history

Saturday was Vanderbilt’s first win against Alabama since 1984 and the signature moment under coach Clark Lea in his fourth season.

Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia sliced through the Alabama defense through the air and on the ground. He went 16-for-20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown with 5:07 to play, putting Vanderbilt ahead 40-28. Pavia also rushed for 56 yards while using his legs to make plays, such as evading the defense long enough to hoist a 36-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Running back Sedrick Alexander ran for two touchdowns.

Alabama pulled within 23-21 with a touchdown drive to open the third quarter, but Pavia made an electric play for a touchdown pass to Junior Sherrill to restore a two-possession lead.
