Bronny James is ready for his NBA preseason debut. And just like every other basketball game he’s ever played, LeBron James will be watching.

The 39-year-old Lakers star will not play in the team’s preseason opener against Minnesota on Friday at Acrisure Arena in the Palm Springs area, according to people familiar with the decision who are not authorized to speak publicly.

The team’s rookies, Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, are both excited about their first taste of NBA action.

“Of course there are nerves,” Bronny James said. “Comes with everything. But I’m just excited to get out there and learn and learn from the people that play for me. And if I get the chance to show my game, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.”

Knecht, the Lakers’ first-round pick, said he was focused on a simple job.

“We’re ready to knock down shots, defend (and) rebound,” he said. “Basically just clearing the space for the guys and then just being ready to score the ball. That’s it. Play defense and rebounding.”

During three days of practice, Bronny James enjoyed working with JJ Redick, the Lakers’ new coach.

“He’s been a great coach so far,” Bronny James said. “There has been a great atmosphere in the facility so far, so I feel like the atmosphere has improved from last year from what I’ve heard.”

The special moments as teammates and competitors between LeBron and Bronny James will have to remain private within the Lakers’ practices.

“I would say for me, it’s just building confidence playing at this next level,” Bronny James said. “Going out and getting my reps. Making those shots means a lot, but it only results in buckets. It’s not really a difference. Just playing with my father is a special experience and I am very grateful for it.”
