UNLV (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) is ranked 25th in the country and has multiple wins over Power-Four teams. The Rebels defeated Kansas and Houston. That, combined with their undefeated record, has them projected as a College Football Playoff team in some rooms. The Rebels would make it as the top-ranked team in the Group of Five in those projections.

A loss to Syracuse (3-1, 1-1 ACC) would likely derail those plans. The Dutch team wants to win multiple games against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 during the regular season for the first time since 2001. Syracuse defeated two ranked teams in 2018, but one of them was West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

The Rebels won their four games by an average of 31.5 points. They rank sixth in the nation in rushing, averaging 283 yards per game in an offense that features a lot of triple option principles. They’re also not allergic to throwing the ball, averaging 147 yards per game.

This will be UNLV’s second game without quarterback Matthew Sluka, who left the program amid an NIL dispute. His absence wasn’t an issue last week, with Campbell transfer Hajj-Malik Williams looking just as capable, if not better. Williams left Campbell with the program’s all-time rushing record, throwing for 8,236 yards over five seasons.

Teams have been able to throw pretty well at the Rebels (226 yards per game), but UNLV has made up for that with nine interceptions, which ranks second in the nation.

Safety Jalen Catelon has four, the most in the country. He will be someone SU quarterback Kyle McCord seems likely to avoid.

Catelon thrived for three seasons at Arkansas under defensive coordinator Barry Odom, now the head coach at UNLV. Catelon was twice named a preseason All-American by Phil Steele while with the Razorbacks. He transferred to Texas last season and didn’t have the same success, leading to the transfer to UNLV and reuniting with Odom.
