Mets play broadcaster’s viral call about Pete Alonso’s home run on plane and give him a standing ovation

The New York Mets are widely considered to have the best announcers in sports, and an example of why was given Thursday night.

Howie Rose, who has been calling Mets games since 1995 and has become a fan of the team, was on the call on 880 AM in New York, and both Rose and Pete Alonso delivered the big moment.

Trailing 2-0 and two outs away from elimination, Alonso hit a three-run home run to give New York a 3-2 lead. They ultimately won 4-2 and advanced past the Milwaukee Brewers to the divisional round.

If the Mets end up winning it all, Rose’s call will definitely be in the highlight video.

“It’s gone! He did it! He did it! Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career!” Rose exclaimed as the ball trickled over the fence. “Pete Alonso keeps this fairytale season going with the fairytale swing of his career! 3-2 New York!”

After the champagne showers, Rose and the Mets head to Philadelphia for the NLDS against the Phillies.

But as Rose sat on the plane, near the front and the rest of the team a few rows away, someone played the conversation over the plane’s speakers.

Rose was shy at first and even covered his ears, but the Mets players gave him a standing ovation.

The presenter turned, pointed at Alonso and saluted, and the two shared a huge hug.

PETE ALONSO SENDS NEW YORK METS TO NLDS WITH DRAMATIC HOMER IN NINTH INNING

Rose was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame last year, along with TV broadcaster Gary Cohen. Thursday night’s home run call automatically rolls over to Rose’s Mt. Rushmore Call. Rose also was behind the microphone for Mike Piazza’s home run in the Mets’ first home game after 9/11 and Stéphane Matteau’s 1994 goal to send the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final.

The miraculous victory is déjà vu for the Mets. It came just three days after the Mets fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the eighth and 7-6 in the ninth against the Atlanta Braves to clinch a postseason spot in their first game of a doubleheader.

Everything seemed to be falling apart for the Mets, who, after retiring Jose Quintana after six scoreless innings, allowed back-to-back home runs to start the seventh inning. According to OPTA Stats, Alonso’s blast was the first ever by a Met while trailing in the 9th inning or later of a winner-take-all postseason game.
