MILWAUKEE – The Mets’ season was on the brink of disaster.

Pete Alonso, in what could be his last game with the team, ensured that wouldn’t be the case.

Alonso ripped a go-ahead three-run home run to right field in the ninth inning to lift the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Brewers in a must-see NL Wild Card Game 3 on Thursday night at American Family Field.

It was the Mets’ first playoff series victory since 2015 and helped them earn a date with the Phillies in the NLDS, starting Saturday in Philadelphia.

PHILLIES ARE NEXT: Mets vs. Phillies: 3 things to know ahead of NLDS

With the Mets pulling off an improbable win, here’s our analysis of Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series:

Jose Butto allows back-to-back home runs as Brewers surge ahead

In the blink of an eye, a scoreless game was broken open when Carlos Mendoza went to his bullpen and turned to Jose Butto for only the third time for two appearances in three days.

In the seventh inning, Butto switched to pinch-hitter Jake Bauers, who hit the ball for a go-ahead solo home run to right. Then Sal Frelick jumped on a fastball in the first pitch and ripped it to the second deck for another home run.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead and the buzz at American Family Field has exploded.

Jose Quintana shined in big spot for Mets

In an elimination match it’s all hands on deck, but Jose Quintana provided manager Carlos Mendoza with enough quality that it didn’t matter.

The veteran southpaw pitched six scoreless innings, striking out five and working about four hits and one walk to keep the Mets in the game despite an offensive no-show for 6⅓ innings.

Jose Buto is at the plate for the bottom of the seventh inning, while the Mets and Brewers are scoreless.

Tobias Myers finished for the Brewers after five scoreless innings

Francisco Lindor had the only two hits for the Mets off Brewers starter Tobias Myers, who struck out five and walked none. He hit one batter (Jesse Winker) and had one wild pitch.

The Mets left three runners on base against Myers. Trevor Megill is now in sixth place after throwing 22 pitches on Wednesday.

Jose Quintana continues to work through problems

In the fourth inning, Willy Adames reached base on a slow helicopter to Mark Vientos, then advanced to third base on a stolen base and a ground ball. Jose Quintana got out of trouble by planting a chopper to his right and throwing out Sal Frelick.

We’ve been scoreless for four innings. Quintana is at 55 pitches and has left four runners on base.

Jose Quintana trails first runner in back-to-back innings

The Brewers threatened Jose Quintana in the first two innings, but the left-handed Mets came through unscathed.

In the first inning, Jackson Chourio led off with a single and advanced to second base on a ground ball to left. Quintana popped up Will Adames. In the second inning, Gary Sanchez hit a leadoff double, but Quintana struck out two consecutive batters and Joey Ortiz popped up for Jose Iglesias.

Francisco Lindor left first in scoring position

Francisco Lindor was aggressive in his opening at bat. After placing a hit in right-center field, Lindor took off for an extra base and reached base after the ball popped out of Willy Adams’ glove.

The Mets couldn’t field him from there, with Mark Vientos looking at strike three, Brandon Nimmo striking out and Pete Alonso flying to center field.
