Lionel Messi, a man of notoriously few words, said it best himself.

“First goal achieved,” the Inter Miami superstar said on Instagram. “We move forward with the desire to achieve more things together.”

These fourteen words might be the perfect summary of Inter Miami’s season. It was never going to be as simple as those with a cursory understanding of their star-studded roster might think. But honestly, they were expected to at least win two MLS trophies this year. They secured it on Wednesday night, bringing home the Supporters’ Shield with a 3-2 win over Columbus Crew – their presumed biggest rivals for MLS Cup glory.

And that’s all very nice. Messi can say he has won trophy No. 1. 46, expanding his record. Miami profiles itself as mathematically the best team in the league. But that recognition – given to the team with the best record in MLS – is the first part of a much bigger goal. The real work, actually pursuing a first MLS Cup in franchise history, begins now.
