Jason Benetti still calling Detroit Tigers games in 2025? What we know about Bally Sports

Your regional sports network should be like referees; the less you know about them, the better they are likely to do.

Unfortunately for Detroit sports fans (and fans of many other teams across the country), that was the exact opposite case when it came to Bally Sports.

Bally Sports, a subsidiary of Diamond Sports Group, has become a staple of sports conversations in recent years. Diamond has been in an ongoing bankruptcy battle for several years, which has led to several teams, especially in the MLB, reclaiming their media rights.

Additionally, the Tigers went off the air for several months this year in front of thousands of people in Michigan because Bally Sports Detroit was unavailable to Xfinity customers due to ongoing negotiations over which package Bally should be included in. It was finally worked out in August, but baseball, basketball and hockey fans are no strangers to interruptions related to Bally Sports and their favorite teams.

News broke Wednesday that Tigers fans will likely have to change their viewing habits again. According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, Diamond said during a court hearing that they have dropped their contracts with the Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, meaning those teams will have to renegotiate a new deal or find a new home for their broadcasts.

But what does that mean for Detroit’s new favorite announcer, Jason Benetti? As far as we know, nothing should change on that front; the Tigers’ broadcasters should not face any consequences as they are employees of the team and not Bally Sports Detroit.

The Tigers lured Benetti away from his hometown Chicago White Sox last offseason, signing him to a multi-year contract to replace Matt Shepard. Benetti worked with several different partners this year, including Craig Monroe (who stopped working after June 9 due to an off-field investigation), Andy Dirks, Dan Petry, Kirk Gibson and others, who should continue to be the case where the broadcast of the Tigers also ends up.

Benetti also works for Fox Sports and calls college basketball and football games throughout the year in addition to Tigers games.

Detroit sports fans can’t quite be done with Bally Sports, at least not yet. The Red Wings and Pistons previously signed a new agreement with Diamond to maintain their broadcasts on Bally Sports Detroit for the 2024-2025 season.
