Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters after the 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. He shared his thoughts on Rashee Rice’s devastating injury in the aftermath of a first-quarter interception.

“I mean, I didn’t know exactly what was happening because I was obviously trying to make the tackle, but I know Rashee (Rice) and how strong he is, so he was so down. I knew that wasn’t right, said Mahomes. “So all we’re doing is praying that the x-rays on my eyes and stuff are better than they looked, but I mean, the next guy until he gets back.”

While trying to make the tackle, Mahomes caught Rice’s knee, accidentally rolling him up and knocking him out for the rest of the game and likely more this season. He was visibly angry about the scenario, but remained optimistic that Rice could recover and that teammates would take his place on the field.

“For a guy to step up and fill the role he plays in our offense to the best of his ability, that’s a big one. All we can do now is go back to basics and try to get guys and opportunities. ” to succeed,” Mahomes said. “I thought Travis (Kelce) did a great job of stepping up and making plays. He always does that, but in the end we got the win.”

Travis Kelce returned to a familiar role as a primary target after Rice’s injury and could take on more targets now that the second-year receiver is out of the lineup.
