    Al Michaels annoyed by penalties in Cowboys vs Giants game

    Veteran broadcaster Al Michaels made no secret of his frustration with the sloppy, slow-moving first half of the “Thursday Night Football” game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.

    In particular, Amazon Prime’s play-by-play channel expressed disdain for the number of penalties imposed by Clay Martin’s crew during the first 30 minutes.

    The Cowboys and Giants were whistled for a total of twelve fouls in the first half, but flags hit the field more often. The referees took a few flags and had a few instances of compensatory penalties, causing many stoppages throughout the first half.

    After the two-minute warning, an irritated Michaels joked to commentator Kirk Herbstreit about the sheer number of flags they had witnessed in the first half.

    “It looks like June 14th here, also known as Flag Day, as you know,” Michaels joked before saying that Martin “looked like a referee straight out of central casting.”

    Michaels became increasingly disenchanted as the half dragged on. He initially sounded excited when Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux jumped offsides on a third-and-12, but the life left his voice as more fouls were called during the play.

    ‘We still have a flag. You still have two flags in the backfield. There’s no more laundry left,” Michaels said, exasperated. “And there are still so many calls coming your way.”

    Martin then announced that mistakes had been made by both teams during the game. Michael’s response?

    “I bet,” he said.

    Michaels’ brutality didn’t stop there. When the Cowboys were called for a false start for a punt with 14 seconds left in the half, Herbstreit asked if that foul was the eighth of the half on Dallas.

    “No, it’s the 147th,” Michaels replied, eliciting a laugh from his partner.

    Herbstreit decided to continue pushing Michaels to discuss the penalties. He asked if Michaels had ever seen so many penalties in one half in his career.

    The veteran broadcaster thought it was in fact a record for a match he called.

    “You’re going to need new flags to throw in the second half,” Michaels joked. “These are nasty.”

    Michaels continued to complain about the state of the game throughout the second half. He expressed surprise that the first penalty of the third quarter was not called until the 5:20 mark and was surprised that the Giants were only called for four penalties early in the fourth quarter.
