MLB playoffs 2024 tracker: standings, clinching scenarios, tiebreakers and postseason schedule as of September 27

The MLB postseason is just around the corner. And with three games left in the regular season, any team with World Series aspirations still has a lot to play for.

Let’s take a look at the MLB standings and the playoff picture as it stands today.

On Thursday, the Dodgers captured the NL West title and a top two seed with a win over the Padres. They get a bye through the wildcard round and home field advantage in the NLDS. The Dodgers earned their twelfth straight postseason appearance with a 20-4 (yes, 20-4) win over the Marlins on September 19. In it, Ohtani delivered an absolutely historic performance, sealing the first 50-50 season in MLB history. .

The Yankees clinched the AL East, a top two seed, a first-round bye and home field advantage in the ALDS with their 10-1 win over the Orioles on Thursday. They compete with the Guardians for the AL’s No. 1 seed.

On Wednesday, the Phillies clinched a top-two finish in the NL playoffs with their win over the Cubs, combined with the Brewers’ defeat of the Pirates. The champions of NL East receive a bye through the wildcard round and home advantage in the NLDS. They compete with the Dodgers for the NL’s No. 1 seed.

On Tuesday, the Orioles clinched an AL playoff berth with their win over the Yankees, combined with the Twins’ loss to the Marlins. They haven’t secured their postseason seed yet.

Also Tuesday, the Astros punched their postseason ticket and won their fourth straight AL West title with a win over the Mariners. They will be the No. 3 seed in the AL bracket and will host a wild card series.

The Padres clinched their spot in the NL postseason series with a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday, a victory that ended with a triple play. They haven’t clinched their postseason seed yet.

On September 19, the Guardians punched their ticket to October with a walk-off win against the Twins. Cleveland clinched the AL Central title on Saturday, and Tuesday’s 6-1 win over the Reds secured them no worse than the No. 2 seed in the American League, meaning they have a bye through the wild-card round and home field . advantage in the ALDS.

The Brewers clinched the NL Central title on September 18. They haven’t clinched their playoff seed yet.

The Royals, Tigers and Mets have the postseason in sight, according to FanGraphs, with odds above 70%. The Diamondbacks are above 50%, but still have a way to go to reach October.

Seven of the eight teams that clinched their postseason berths are still vying for playoff seeding. Only the Astros secured their seed (No. 3 in the AL).

The Twins and Braves aren’t eliminated yet and are still looking for wild-card spots, though they have work to do and quite a bit of help to get there.

Once a team punches its ticket to the postseason, there is still a lot to play for. Teams can compete for play-off placement during the final weekend of the season.

Numbers 1 and 2 from each competition go to the division winners with the two best records. Those teams earn a bye through the wild card round and hosting rights in the division series.

The No. 3 seed goes to the winner of the third division, and that team will host a three-game wild card series against the No. 6 seed (who goes to the third wild card). The top wild card team earns the No. 4 seed and hosting duties against the No. 5 seed in the wild card round.

The higher seed will also get home field advantage in the championship series, once we get that far.
