Andy Reid announces Chiefs starter officially benched

The left tackle position remains a major conundrum for the Chiefs, as neither rookie Kingsley Suamataia nor sophomore Wanya Morris have stood out in a significant way. It’s a confusing situation, and head coach Andy Reid announced the plan moving forward.

Reid told reporters Monday in a call with the media that Morris would start in Week 4 against the Chargers. Suamataia has been officially benched and it is unclear when he will return to the left tackle role.

Patrick Mahomes is constantly under pressure from his blind side and Suamataia clearly needs more time to develop.

“I thought Wanya did some good things there,” Reid said. “We’ll probably leave it at that… Kingsley rotated and played some tight end and was able to get some good reps.”

It’s bizarre that Suamataia would play tight end snaps, though he’s certainly athletic enough to handle the added responsibilities. He’s had a rough start, playing just a handful of games, but his athletic potential is still sky-high.

That Morris would take over Suamataia’s starting position wasn’t in the plans, though. The coaching staff almost certainly intended for Suamataia to be the starter all season, but his struggles against Trey Hendrickson in Week 2 seem to have changed things.

We’ll see how the rest of the year goes, but Brett Veach may regret his second-round acquisition. That doesn’t seem likely, and it’s likely that the organization simply believes Suamataia needs more time before he’s ready to fill such an important role.

Either way, the left tackle position will probably be the biggest question the offense will have to deal with. Suamataia is theoretically the future, but he still has some work to do to get back into the lineup.
