Changes Ahead, Possible Severe Thunderstorms Return to South Plains

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Another warm day on the South Plains with afternoon temperatures in the 90s across the region. Lubbock’s 96 degrees was just 3 degrees shy of the record high of 99 set in 2021.

That will change tomorrow, as clouds and storms increase in the region. A strong cold front will arrive on Sunday morning.

I expect temperatures from Lubbock north into the Panhandle to be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit again, while eastern and southern areas will still see temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday.

Scattered storms are expected in New Mexico tomorrow afternoon. These storms will move west and northwest of the South Plains late this afternoon and will move across some areas Saturday night into Sunday.

Isolated severe storms are possible across western and northwestern communities tomorrow evening, with storm intensity decreasing Sunday morning. Heavy rain, wind gusts of 60 mph or higher, and hail larger than one inch in diameter are possible.

Our first ‘cold’ front will roll into the area early Sunday, bringing strong northerly winds, a chance of storms, and highs in the mid to upper 70s only. Daytime highs will remain about ten degrees below normal from Sunday through the middle of next week.
