First half

04:42: The officials give Stanford an extra 15 yards on a personal foul after the play. It appeared that two players were not paying attention and collided. Stanford’s first offensive play is an incomplete pass. After a short run, Stanford is able to pick up a 3rd-and-9 on a pass from Daniels to Musia Reuben.

Syracuse point

05:00: A McCord scramble leads to a loss of 1 and sets up 3rd-and-9. Stanford shows off a blitz, but then lets his linebackers fall into a zone. McCord shoots high and Syracuse will punt again. Stanford’s Tiger Bachmeier is taken down at his 14.

06:46: McCord makes a pair of passes to pick up a first down, first on a rollout to Oronde Gadsden. Then to Darrell Gill Jr. Then LeQuint Allen crashes forward for 3.

7:22 Syracuse takes over the 25-yard line after a touchback.

SCORE: Stanford 7, Syracuse 0

07:22: Stanford gets a first down on a 5-yard pass and then a 10-yard run by Micah Ford. Currently on their own 37-yard line. Daniels throws for another first down, this time to Ismael Cisse. Some rough tackling contributes to that. Then Daniels completes another pass and has moved the ball to the Syracuse 31. Daniels has held the last two plays and has 18 yards. Syracuse really has problems with tackling.

False start sets Stanford back and sets up 2nd-and-8 from the SU 17. Incomplete pass sets up 3rd-and-8. Stanford takes the lead on a rollout pass and reception by Eric Ayomanor. The extra point is good.

Stanford has already collected 35 yards in 7 attempts.

Syracuse point

11:37: Kyle McCord throws for a quick first down, followed by a 6-yard run by LeQuint Allen. McCord throws just behind Oronde Gadsden on a rollout and the tight end can’t make what would have been a great catch. Then McCord’s deep pass to Umari Hatcher is batted away. Stanford with a fair catch on its 22-yard line.

Stanford Point

12:53: Stanford starts with the ball at its 25. Quick first down on an Ashton Daniels throw, followed by a QB keeper for another 3. A penalty puts Stanford behind the sticks. Daniels gets 4 yards, despite breaking tackles to prevent a loss. Syracuse forces a fourth down as Daniels’ pass goes through the hands of Tiger Backmier. Trebor Pena calls for a fair catch at his 18-yard line.

Prediction

At least three depth chart players are not dressed for Syracuse tonight, all of them a surprise to most of us. Defensive lineman Tank Wilson and backup running back Will Nixon are a couple.

Wilson’s absence will be particularly interesting. He is rated SU’s highest-graded run defender by Pro Football Focus this season, aside from Marlowe Wax. The Orange are now without both. The run defense was poor in the opener against Ohio, but played well against Georgia Tech.

Syracuse looks to remain undefeated on Friday night as the Orange (2-0, 1-0) hosts Stanford in the first ACC game for the Cardinal (1-1, 0-0).

Stanford is also looking for its first FBS win this season, having lost a close game to Texas Christian in its opener and then defeated FCS Cal-Poly in its second game.

Stanford’s pass defense was suspect against Texas Christian, allowing 353 yards through the air. Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord ranks second in the nation in passing yards per game (367.5).

Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels is a dual threat who threw for 163 yards against TCU and had 87 yards rushing. Wide receiver Elic Ayomanor had 1,013 yards receiving last year. It will be interesting to see how Syracuse rates him.

Syracuse receiver Justus Ross-Simmons is expected to make his debut. He transferred from Colorado State during the offseason and was one of several key signings made by Fran Brown during the offseason.

Linebacker Marlowe Wax remains out with a lower-body injury.

The Orange enter the game on the verge of the national top 25 in college football, and SU could claw its way to the top with an impressive win and the right results elsewhere in the country.
