The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez

Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezpremiered on Friday and is quickly becoming Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s latest hit.

The limited series marks the next installment of Murphy’s “Monster” franchise with the streamer, following the runaway success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” starring Evan Peters. Ian Brennan reteamed with the mega-producer to bring the Menendez brothers’ story to the screen, from their traumatic upbringing to the infamous night they murdered their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

The limited series attempts to uncover who the real monsters were in the high-profile murder trial. The Menendez brothers captivated America as their televised Court TV trial was one of the first of its kind. The two boys murdered their parents on August 20, 1989, when they were just 18 and 21 years old. Their lawyer claimed it was self-defense, but both were convicted of first-degree murder and, after two trials, were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The story is propelled by a soundtrack that fits the era, featuring Vanilla Ice and, in an ironic nod from Murphy, the combative brother duo Milli Vanilli.
