New York Magazine places reporter on leave after alleged affair with RFK Jr.

New York Magazine suspended its Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi this week after it emerged she had “a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while covering the campaign,” the newspaper said in a statement.

According to the news outlet Status, it would concern a relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent candidate who suspended his campaign last month and supported former President Donald Trump.

New York Magazine did not mention Kennedy by name in its statement, and a spokeswoman for the magazine did not respond to a request from ABC News to confirm that he was actually the subject.

But in statements, neither Nuzzi nor a representative for Kennedy denied Status’s reporting of Kennedy’s involvement.

“Earlier this year, the nature of communications between me and a former reporting subject became personal,” Nuzzi said in a statement. “At that time, I did not report on the subject directly or use them as a source. The relationship was never physical, but should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret that I did not do so immediately and apologize to those I let down, particularly my colleagues in New York.”

Stefanie Spear, a spokeswoman for Kennedy, told ABC News in a statement: “Mr. Kennedy met Olivia Nuzzi only once in his life for an interview she requested, which resulted in a critical article.”

Spear did not respond to a follow-up question about whether Kennedy denies the allegation of a romantic relationship.

A profile of Kennedy by Nuzzi, in which she walked with the candidate near his Southern California home, was published in November.

Kennedy had by then given up his Democratic candidacy for president and was now an independent. The polls in the swing states were also promising.

But a shortage of money and a wave of unfavorable headlines undermined his campaign.

Kennedy is married to actress Cheryl Hines, who has not spoken publicly about the alleged relationship.

Nuzzi’s ex-fiancé, Ryan Lizza, Politico’s chief Washington correspondent, wrote in Friday’s “Playbook” newsletter: “Because of my connection to this story through my ex-fiancé, my editors and I have agreed that I will not be involved in any reporting about Kennedy in Playbook or elsewhere at POLITICO.”
